Elderberry Syrup


Elderberry syrup can be as simple as elderberry, water and honey. If you have sickies in the house or just need it asap, feel free to make it without the extra ingredients. If you have the extra ingredients and/or the time to get them, they boost the nutritional value and the flavor.

Elderberry Syrup

  • 1/2 cup dried elderberry
  • 2  1/2  cups water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 tsp dried, or 1 Tbs fresh grated ginger
  •  peel from 1 whole organic orange


  1. Combine all ingredients except honey.
  2. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer
  3. Simmer with a lid, cracked open, for 45  minutes to an hour. Liquid will reduce by close to half
  4. Strain the liquid out (pressing lightly to get as much syrup as possible).
  5. Allow to cool to body temperature. Then add the honey.
  6. Pour into a clean jar and cap. Store in the fridge.

If your family doesn’t use it very fast – pouring it into 1/2 pint containers and using one at a time will help the elderberry syrup last longer. We take about 1 Tbs per day (1 tsp for little kids) during flu season. We use that same dosage every 1- 2 hours for someone that’s already sick.
